PROVIDING COMFORT AND FELLOWSHIP TO OUR TROOPS

............

-Stand Down Troop-

The Words that most troops are happy to hear... Stand Down, it is when the worries, the fear, the stress of battle are removed from you and it is your time for R&R.

Support Sacramento has for the past few months centered its efforts and resources to the Welcoming Ministry at Sacramento International Airport. That is not the whole of Support Sacramento where we minister to all Armed Forces Active, National Guard, and Veterans. With 6000 Armed Forces members committing suicide and thousands more ending up on the streets after returning to the states Support Sacramento sees it calling and meets it. Through The Street Ministry of Sacramento, Psalms Church of the Street & patrnerships with other Ministries Support Sacramento is meeting that calling. One of the, & most likely the best way of meeting the needs of Street Vets is "STAND DOWN", here we work with Vets to change the direction of their lives and become free of those things that hold them down. On the 28th through the 30th of August Support Sacramento will be standing up at the Stand Down in Marysville Yuba City California.

The Street Ministry of Sacramento Honors Support Sacramento with

President’s Volunteer Service Award

Award is a Prestigious National Honor for Volunteer Service

Sacramento CA – The Street Ministry today announced it has awarded Support Sacramento with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national honor offered in recognition of volunteer service. Established in 2003, the Award is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering. As one of thousands of Certifying Organizations participating in the Award program, The Street Ministry confers the award to recognize the outstanding achievements of its volunteers. Support Sacramento has only a short history of volunteer service, and more than 12 volunteers perform community service hours of more than 1800 hours this year alone on behalf of the organization. Support Sacramento performs minor auto and household repairs for families of Deployed troop around Sacramento and northern California as well as operates the Support Sacramento Welcoming Center at Sacramento International Airport for troops in transit. “In his 2002 State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush created the USA Freedom Corps, and called on every American to make a lifelong commitment to volunteer service.  The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals and families who have answered that call,” said Christopher Garrett Senior Chaplain, of The Street Ministry “America’s volunteers work to make our communities stronger and safer. As a Certifying Organization for the Award program, The Street Ministry is proud to be aligned with this prestigious volunteer award, and we are especially proud of our volunteers who have made volunteer service a central part of their lives.” The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an award for volunteer service that every American – from every age and every walk of life – can aspire to achieve.  To be eligible to receive the Award, individuals, families and groups submit a record of their annual volunteer service hours to participating Certifying Organizations, such as The Street Ministry, that will verify the service and deliver the Award. Award eligibility for individuals and groups is based on hour requirements varying by age.  “These recipients of the President’s Volunteer Service Award are role models for all Americans,” Chaplain Garrett said.  “Each volunteer hour contributed makes a difference in improving the quality of life for others, and I encourage everyone to contribute to our community by volunteering.  Volunteers bring us closer together as families, as communities and as a Nation, through their commitment.” The Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, a group created by President Bush to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making to our Nation.  Chaired by two-time Super Bowl Champion Darrell Green, with former U.S. Senators Bob Dole and John Glenn as honorary co-chairs, the Council comprises leaders in government, media, entertainment, business, education, nonprofits and volunteer service organizations, and community volunteering.

Support Sacramento has been on-site for four (4) weeks now meeting ad greeting troops as they deploy and return at Sacramento International Airport and what a blessing it has been for those involved. We have met and fellow-shipped with members of all the Armed Forces and they were extremely thankful that there was someone there who cared. Thanks to Military Ministry we have an expanded version of the RDK supplied by them. Our troops are taken by surprise at receiving the RDKs and that they get them for free, there's a joke for free considering the price they pay in time and stressful situations. We are now working on putting together crews to assist the families left behind. We are in need of crew members who can do Minor Auto and Household repairs. Volunteers are needed to help fill the time slots during the day time hours that I can not fill because of my work schedule. If you would like to meet and greet America's newest heroes and welcome them home or wish them safe passage please contact me for more information. I can be reached at 1-916-519-6504 or at our E-mail address of Chaplain,Garrett@Yahoo.Com I thank you now for your helping in this terrific mission.
